You can come in from three sides

Friuli Venezia Giulia is crossed by two motorways that meet at Palmanova: one runs from Venice to Trieste along the coast, the other climbs from there to the Austrian border following the Canal del Ferro. Away from those two the roads are local and you travel slowly, which is no bad thing.

By car and motorhome

For Lignano you leave at Latisana, for Grado at Ancona or Palmanova, for Trieste you stay on to the end. For the mountains you follow signs for Tarvisio: it is one of the easiest alpine motorways in Italy, wide and largely in tunnel, and it can be driven with a long vehicle without demanding gradients.

The border passes, the Predil towards Slovenia and Monte Croce Carnico towards Austria, are narrow and full of hairpins: they can be done in a motorhome but slowly, and in winter they may close.

By train

The main line runs from Venice to Trieste through Latisana, Cervignano and Monfalcone: from all three there is a bus to the seaside resorts. Udine is on the line climbing towards Austria. Trieste is a terminus, and the station is in the centre.

By plane

The regional airport is at Ronchi dei Legionari, between Trieste and Gorizia, with a railway stop outside the door: it is one of the few Italian airports where you step off the plane and walk to a train. Venice and Ljubljana are both an hour and a half away and have more flights.
